Halls of Infinity

When I was a kid I had a dream that I was standing next to a line of both myselves and not myselves.

I was in a bright white room where the horizon seemed to extend into infinity in every direction except the west. I was facing north and to my right, in the east, I could see a line of what appeared to be me all standing motionless facing north.

I glanced down the line and I could see a couple hundred of myself all lined up shoulder to shoulder staring into the northern white abyss.

I was wearing a plain white robe and as I looked down the line I could see myself wearing more ornate blue accessories with the robes. I observed some wonderfully intricate blue stoles and mitres. However the farther I looked down the line I appeared to be shrinking!

To the my left in the west I saw the same thing but with red accessories instead of blue. Indeed I appeared to be growing the farther I looked to the west. However I could only see a few hundred myselves down the line… there was a grey mist fogging the distance.

I asked the self standing most immediate to me in blue what this place was. “The Halls of Infinity” he cheerily replied.

“To my right you’ll find all past versions of yourself! To the left you’ll find the most probable future possibilities!”

Not sure what to make of this I treaded to the east a couple dozen me’s and asked another self, this one in more ornate garb. He said the same thing and also rambled off some details about things I was worried about three or so weeks before. Something about midterm examinations.

Next I trotted to the west, looking to talk to myself in the red. “I’ll be able to ask my future self what the winning lottery tickets are!”

I approached a me in ornate red stoles and asked what the winning lottery tickets numbers would be a few weeks in the future.

“It doesn’t work like that” he frowned.

“What do you mean how can you not know if you’re from the future!” I bemoaned

“I have no memory here” he frowned again “I can’t tell you specific things. Imagine this, I’m you but without the memory. I am you in the day to day reactionary kind of sense.”

“Okkkkkay so what about high school?” at the time I was worried about getting into the esteemed private high school in my home town.

“I have a good feeling about that” he said finally cracking a smile.

Suddenly my vision started to white out and I remember trying to grab onto future me so I wouldn’t leave…. and the next thing I knew I was awake in my bed room.

I eventually got into that high school, something I now think I was fated to do all along.

As for that dream… I didn’t know this at the time but I think that was one of my first experiences with the collective.
